The Condoriri range is possibly one of the most varied «mini-chains» of the Cordillera Real. This hike gives you a strong taste of its diversity. Crossing four mountain passes, one each day, and passing through three beautiful and vast lagoons, is truly an assault on the senses. The high altitude requires good acclimatization to enjoy this hike, but it is not extremely physically demanding.
Day 1.- LAGUNA AJUANI – LAGUNA JURI KHOTA.
Early departure from La Paz by car to the Ajuani Valley, where we begin our trek (4,700 m). The road is winding but attractive until we reach the Sistaña lagoon, where we take a break for lunch. At this point, the road begins to ascend towards the top from where we can see the beautiful landscape of the area; we arrive at the Juri Khota lagoon, beautiful and secluded, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Day 2.- LAGUNA JURI KHOTA – PASO AUSTRIA – LAGUNA CHIAR KHOTA.
From Juri khota Lagoon we begin by a steep slope to reach Glacial Lagoon, a jewel nested at a height of 4,900 meters at the foot of the Condoriri glacier.
From there we go up to the Austria pass (5140 m.). The ascent to Pico Austria (5,350 m.) is recommended, its summit is an excellent viewpoint of the entire Cordillera, after a photo session we descend to the Chiar khota Lagoon (4,630 m.) where we will establish our camp.
Day 3.- CHIAR KHOTA – PICO TARIJA – PEQUEÑO ALPAMAYO.
On this day we will start with an early departure (4:00 a.m.). Our first route is to climb the Tarija Peak (5,350 m). This first part is technically easy, when we reach its summit we will continue downhill and then climb to the SMALL ALPAMAYO (5,425 m). The return to our camp is by the same route, it is a long day.
Day 4.- PASO JISTAÑA – MARIA LLOCO.
Today we pass the Jistaña pass, with an altitude of 4,900 m, which leads to the Racahcha valley. We continue through the valley until we reach a small town where we establish our camp. At the bottom of the valley we can see the mountains of María Lloco and the west face of Huayna Potosí.
Day 5.- MARIA LLOCO – PASO MILLUNI – HUAYNA POTOSI.
Our last pass is the Huallatani pass or Milluni pass (4,850 m). From here, on a clear day, we can enjoy the impressive views of the mountains of Maria Lloco and the mighty Huayna Potosi. In the afternoon we arrive at Huayna Potosi Base Camp.
Day 6.- BASE CAMP – HIGH CAMP HUAYNA POTOSI.
After breakfast, we will begin the ascent to Rocas camp (5,135m), where we will spend the night in the local refuge. The ascent time to this camp is 2-3 hours through the moraine.
Day 7 .- HIGH CAMP – SUMMIT HUAYNA POTOSI – RETURN TO LA PAZ.
After a very early breakfast, we will start climbing the glacier, we continue to the top of the mountain. Huayna Potosi (6080 meters), after about five hours of ascent we reach the summit. Once at the top, we will be able to enjoy impressive panoramic views of the Andes mountain range and the sunrise. Then we begin the descent back to the high camp, after a short rest we continue to base camp where the vehicle awaits to take us back to the city of La Paz.
