Ajuani – Huayna Potosí

Ajuani – Huayna Potosi. (6 days) Climbing + Trekking


The Condoriri range is arguably one of the most varied «mini-ranges» in the Cordillera Real. This trek gives you a strong flavour of its diversity. Crossing 4 mountain passes – one each day – and passing three beautiful and vast lagoons, it really is an assault on the senses. The high altitude requires that you be reasonably well acclimatised to enjoy this trek, but it is not extremely physically demanding.

Day 1.- LAGUNA AJUANI – LAGUNA JURI KHOTA
Early departure from La Paz in vehicle to the valley of Ajuani where we begin our trek (4,700m).The path is winding but appealing until we arrive at Sistaña lagoon, where we take a lunch break. In this point, the path starts ascending toward the summit. We arrive at Juri khota lagoon, beautiful and isolated, surrounded by snowcapped mountains.Camp on the shores of Lake Juri Khota.

Day 2.- LAGUNA JURIKHOTA – LAGUNA GLACIAL – PASO AUSTRIA – CHIAR KHOTA
From Laguna Jurikhota we begin by ascending up a steep slope to reach Laguna Glacial a jewel nested at an altitude of 4900 meters at the foot of El Condoriri.
From there we keep climbing to a second pass (Paso Austria 5,100 m.) before descending on the other side towards base camp, at the edge of Laguna Chiar khota.

Day 3.- CHIAR KHOTA – PICO TARIJA – PEQUEÑO ALPAMAYO.
On this day we will begin with an early departure (5:00am). Our first route is to climb the Pico Tarija (5,300m) beyond which we will continue down then back up to PEQUEÑO ALPAMAYO (5,425m). We will then return to base camp. Is a long day.

Day 3.- PASO JISTAÑA – BASE DE MARIA LLOCO.
We continue trekking, Today’s pass is the Jistaña pass, with an altitude of 4,900m, taking us into the valley of Racahcha valley. There we will camp at the edge of the Hichu khota, at the civilised altitude of 4,450m. Base of the mountain Maria Lloco.

Day 4.- PASO MILLUNI – HUAYNA POTOSI
Our final pass is the Huallatani pass (4,850m). From here, on a clear day we can enjoy the stunning views of the mountains Maria Lloco and the mighty Huayna Potosi. Huayna Potosi base camp.

DAY 5.- CAMPO BASE – CAMPO ALTO
After breakfast we will start the ascent (mostly on rock) to the Rock Camp (5,135m), where we will set camp on the glacier. Hiking time for 2-3 hours moraine.

DAY 6.- CAMPO ALTO – CUMBRE – LA PAZ.
After a very early breakfast we will begin heading up the glacier, aiming towards the east face and arriving at the Pala. We then continue all the way to the top arriving at the summit of Mt. Huayna Potosi (6080 meters), after about six hours of ascent. Once at the top we’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Andes Mountains and the sun rising to the east. We will then start our descent back to base camp and onward to Laguna Zongo, where our vehicle will be waiting for us to return to La Paz.
